Just when you start thinking that the Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) self-promotion machine can’t possibly be as good as the Elon Musk never-ending self-promotion machine, we get an article like this recent one one yahoo finance: “Has Google Found It's Own Zuckerberg?” The short answer is now. The longer answer is that no one in their right mind thinks the dude who started 4Chan that no one has heard of is the next Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg famously turned down a billion dollar offer from Yahoo in Facebook’s early stages. Christopher Poole sold 4Chan for an undisclosed amount of money. Sure, it was probably a lot, but it’s safe to assume it is nowhere near the value of Facebook (NASDAQ: FB). Not many things are. You’ve got to hand it to Google for getting reputable news organizations to put this kind of spin on this situation. They have Yahoo convinced that Poole might actually be able to turn around Google’s moribund social media situation and turn it into something remotely resembling Facebook. Sure, this guy might be great. But the idea that he is going to turn around Google+ is far fetched. An informal survey of my friends has revealed that most have them have been on Myspace more recently than Google Plus, and Myspace is Rupert Murdoch’s forgotten internet graveyard. I don’t know that much about Christopher Poole, but I feel like his experience is not the best fit for this job. Sure, 4Chan is technically social media, but of a different beast than what is popular today. Facebook is making a big investment in streaming. SnapChat is all about streaming and up to the second content. What is Poole’s experience in this regard? Where is the evidence he can stay up to date on what millennials demand from the social media experience? I’m not sure it exists. I’m a huge fan of google. I composed this in Google Docs, for crying out loud. But this move makes no sense to me, and it could be a sign that it will be a long time before Google figures out social. If this negatively affects their stock in the long run, I wouldn’t be surprised.
