Target mentioned in the previous month that they plan to complete the program to implement chip-and-PIN technilogy for its credit cards by the beginning of 2015. It was said to be "in the works" even before the data breach in December. Prior to this, card processors and merchants were debating on whether to use chip-and-signature or chip-and-PIN model for additional security. It would appear however, that companies like Visa, Amex, Mastercard prefer a chip-and-signature system. The reason for this decision is that a chip-and-PIN system would make it more difficult to use their cards. Either way, Walmart has already began implementing the system. After swiping the card, the user has to follow another step and put their card in another slot. It is definitely a bit of a hassle but is something that must be done to ensure data safety.
